Winter adventures always hold a special kind of magic, and my recent trip to Big Springs Sno-Park with a friend was no exception. Nestled in the Willamette National Forest, this hidden gem turned out to be the perfect place for a day of snowshoeing and landscape photography.

The moment we arrived, we were greeted by a breathtaking snowy landscape towering evergreen trees draped in fresh powder, sunlight filtering through the branches, and an untouched quiet that only the wilderness can provide. While there were definitely broken trails from previous adventurers, much of the area still had that pristine, untouched beauty that makes winter hikes so rewarding.

Strapping on our snowshoes, we set off into the forest, following trails that wove through old-growth trees. The snowfall had created a soft, powdery blanket, making each step feel like an exploration of uncharted territory. It wasn’t long before we found ourselves surrounded by a true winter wonderland vast, open spaces with shimmering snowfields, and frost-kissed branches.

With my camera in hand, I took the opportunity to capture the raw beauty of the landscape. Snow-covered pines stood tall against a sky, while distant mountain peaks created a dramatic backdrop. The contrasts between light and shadow made for some incredible shots.

Some of my favorite moments to capture included:

• The untouched snowfall on hidden trails, creating a sense of serenity and isolation.

• The way the light hit the frost-covered trees, making them sparkle like something out of a fairy tale.

• Animal tracks in the snow, a reminder that even in the stillness of winter, the forest is alive.

Every step we took presented a new photo opportunity, and I found myself lost in the process of composing shots, adjusting settings, and waiting for the perfect light. We found ourselves being forced to portrait shots versus landscape shots.

One of the unexpected surprises of the trip was navigating the broken trails. Some sections of the path had been well-traveled, while others had drifted over with fresh snow, forcing us to forge our own way forward. This added an element of adventure, as we had to carefully choose our routes, sometimes breaking through deep snowbanks or navigating uneven terrain.

Despite the challenge, it was well worth it. There’s something truly rewarding about making your way through the wilderness, carving your own path, and immersing yourself fully in nature.

Big Springs Sno-Park was everything I could have hoped for and more a perfect blend of adventure, tranquility, and natural beauty. Whether you’re looking for a peaceful snowshoeing excursion or a chance to capture stunning winter landscapes, this spot is a must-visit.

Until the next adventure, keep exploring and capturing the beauty of the great outdoors!

Stay adventurous, stay inspired.
