Okay, let’s rap! This cover…lots of feels from all over regarding it. I typically fall into the SJW category, but this is the first time I can think of where I felt the protest against a cover was an unwarranted overreaction.

The Killing Joke happened. It’s canon to the New 52niverse. It has been referenced. It’s Barbara’s history (she suffers from PTSD), therefore it’s idiotic to ignore it. Plus, The Joker isn’t a
good guy. I would go so far to say he’s the most f*cked up individual
in the DC Universe…perhaps the DC & Marvel Universes combined. It’s
perfectly within his wheelhouse to torment past victims.

On top of that, it’s a beautiful piece of art by Rafael Albuquerque. The fact that it caused such an emotional response only goes to speak for the quality of the piece.

This was never to be the book’s main cover. This was a variant cover. An optional cover that no one had to purchase. Shops didn’t even have to order it for their shelves.

Tom Feister says it best, “I’m concerned about the larger message this sends to young women. To cave in sends the message that if you’ve been the victim of some sort of trauma you cannot ever overcome that obstacle. All we see in that image is a young woman who is frightened. We don’t know what happens next. What I would hope happens is that the character faces her fear, controls the emotion and wins. Isn’t that the better message to send to the audience of this title?“

I have a friend who lost his parents in a murder/suicide. Should we ban
this cover? Where is the line
drawn?

This is sad, and I hope #SaveTheCover prevails.

Also, where was the outrage over the Batman #37 Kubert variant in which Joker beats to death a teenage male? That was also an homage to a canonical story & not relevant to the one contained within the book.
